Formed in 1792, Cabarrus County has grown into a destination that offers an engaging blend of tradition and innovation. The appeal of Cabarrus County’s smallest town is spelled out in its name. From history to home-cooked meals, the area is packed with pleasant experiences.

At downtown’s 73 & Main, diners can indulge in meals made with fresh ingredients sourced from local farms. Located inside a former hosiery mill, the restaurant also features brews from onsite Old Well Brewery and spirits from nearby Southern Grace Distilleries. As a former prison, the distillery offers unique tours along with tastings of their award-winning whiskey.

Within walking distance of downtown, find retreat at The Inn at Mount Pleasant. Built circa 1920, this four-room B&B is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features beautiful gardens and a porch where you’ll feel right at home. Fuel up with homemade breakfast before setting out to explore spots like the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society Museum where each room archives a different aspect of the region’s history.

Some of the destination’s most picturesque landscapes can be admired in eastern Cabarrus County. A segment of the Carolina Thread Trail, the out-and-back Buffalo Creek Preserve Trail provides an opportunity to hike or bike through a restored Piedmont oak savanna, farmland, and along Adams Creek while taking in the peaceful natural surroundings.

Midland

Reed Gold Mine

A SPARKLING ESCAPE

Located in southern Cabarrus County, the small town of Midland shines for its notable historic site and engaging outdoor experiences.

Did you know the first discovery of gold in the United States happened here in Cabarrus County? In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek on the family’s farm. Now a state historic site, Reed Gold Mine invites visitors to tour restored un derground mine tunnels. View veins of white quartz where the precious metal is found, learn about mining from exhibits inside the Visitor Center, then try your hand at panning. Don’t leave without checking out the historical mining equipment and exploring the trails throughout the grounds.

Continue your golden adventure by soaking up sunshine on the Carolina Thread Trail, a network of trails and blueways that spans North and South Carolina. Segments located in Midland include the Pharr Family Preserve Trail which offers a canoe and kayak launch. The Rocky River Blueway begins here and downriver, the Riverbend Farm Trail also includes a launch for river access.

Midland’s parks and farms provide even more fresh-air family fun. Riverbend Farm welcomes guests to their pumpkin patch in October and in the spring, visitors can pick their own strawberries at Deer Run Farm. Plus, Midland Farms hosts seasonal events including a fall festival and Christmas vendor fair. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy exploring Rob Wallace Park as well for its mountain bike trails, boardwalk, fishing pond, and more.

Round out your perfect outdoor day in Midland with a pit stop at Rocky River Vineyards.

The scenic rolling hills of the Piedmont are on full display at this fam ily owned and operated winery making it the ideal location to enjoy a glass of wine. Just north of Concord, the city of Kannapolis chronicles much of Cabarrus County’s story throughout its attractions and revitalized downtown.

Discover how music and motorsports intertwine at the NC Music Hall of Fame and Curb Museum. Located in the same space, this duo im merses guests in the history of two essential North Carolina experiences by showcasing the legacies of artists, racers and beyond.

As the hometown of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Kannapolis is a fascinating destination for race fans. In downtown, a larger-than-life statue honors the legendary driver at Dale Earnhardt Tribute Plaza. A short drive away, fans will find more motorsports points of interest including Stew art-Haas Racing. Special significance can be found in many Kannapolis locales, from the stunning neon marquees of the historic Swanee and Gem the atres to the identity of the city’s beloved baseball team, the Kannap olis Cannon Ballers. Along with uncovering the area’s history, there’s so much fun to be found in the growing city of Kannapolis. At Marketplace on Main, shop vintage finds from over 180 vendors. Officially incorporated in 1973, the town of Harrisburg holds plenty of opportunities for celebration, recreation, and experiencing Cabarrus County like a local.

Harrisburg knows how to celebrate the holidays! Hop to the Movie provides Easter fun, and summer brings the July 4th Celebration featur ing amusements, live music, two nights of fireworks, and a highly anticipated Independence Day parade. Trick or Treat in the Park is always a spooktacular good time, and counting down during the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is a core memory.

More of the town’s special events celebrate history and heritage. Connect through arts and culture during events like the Art Walk and an nual Harrisburg Multicultural Festival, both brimming with handmade wares, music and more.
