44 Mills Kitchen + Tap promises craft beer with inspired eats, and Ex- ecutive Chef, Mike Watson delivers just that. The menu is packed with interesting options—from small plates and snacks like Street Tacos, Crispy Liver Mush and a Fry Platter to a short rib Sloppy Joe, steaks, seafood, salads, an adult-only Cheerwine Float and more. The restaurant also recalls a bit of area history with its name—a nod to the legacy of Cabarrus County’s 44 textile mills dating back to the 1800s. In Harrisburg, Vortex Bottle Shop owner and longtime homebrewer, Matt Widerman provides another tasty pit stop. The concept includes lots of local beer and wine choices alongside craft products from out- side the state. It’s the perfect place to discover something new and learn what to pair it with. Head Chef, Stephen Armstrong keeps it cre- ative in the kitchen and is always experimenting. The Garlic Portobello Flatbread is a Vortex favorite. Try it with one of the 250+ beers or 100 wines kept in stock. Harrisburg is also home to Percent Tap House , a single-barrel opera- tion that offers plenty of local libations including beer, wine, cider and cold brew coffee. Cozy and cool, Percent Tap House opened at the end of 2018 and is one slice of North Carolina’s craft beer story where you’ll feel right at home. Keep an eye on their calendar for upcoming events and a schedule of when local food trucks will be parked outside. Searching for more snacks to go along with those expertly-crafted local beverages? Grab fine foods to go from independent specialty stores in Cabarrus County. Around the corner from Percent, Small Batch Foody is a curated collection of artisan foods like syrups, sauces, spreads and more. The shop stems from the folks at family-owned Sunflour Baking Company next-door. In addition to good eats, Union Street Market in Downtown Concord carries a selection of essentials and unique gifts. Stop in for coffee and treat yourself to something special.

Spring
Fasten your seatbelt for a full lineup of festivals and events from March through May.
In the spring, things to do become as plentiful as the blooms that bring color back to Cabarrus County’s beautiful landscape—which is especially stunning in Downtown Concord when azaleas open along Union Street and tulips put on a show at the grounds of Memorial Gardens. With April arrives the home opener at Intimidators Stadium, the world’s largest automotive extravaganza, four-wide racing that will blow you away with over 40,000 horsepower and access to the pits with every tick- et, and NC Beer Month (see page 44). But that’s just the start of what spring has in store. May is a month-long celebration. Events warm up with Movies on the Campus, an outdoor film night that’s perfect for families. Then, 60 bar- becue teams from across the United States compete at Jiggy with the Piggy, recently named a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. As part of the barbecue-focused festival, kids can create their own veggie cars and race in the Zucchini 600! Spring is the perfect time for this kind of competition as area Farmer’s Markets start cranking out fresh produce. Downtown Concord’s Spring Into Arts festival follows with a lively show- case of visual and performing arts, and race weeks round out the month with Haulers on Union parade leading the festivities. The NC Education
Lottery 200 and Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star races kick off action at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the new two-day Patriot Nationals add sprint car excitement at The Dirt Track in between NASCAR weekends. See the stars of the Xfinity Series during the ALSCO 300 and arrive early on Sunday for the full Memorial Day weekend experience that comes along with the Coca-Cola 600. There’s plenty to see and do before the main event including a pre-race concert and moving military salute with awe-inspiring flyover.
All this action occurs before summer even begins, so hold on tight!

Summer
June, July and August call for outdoor adventures and cool treats as mid-year happenings bring the heat.
The Town of Harrisburg puts on another patriotic party later in the season with the July Fourth Celebration. In addition to a parade, the event honors our military with fireworks, live entertainment, and plenty of amusement. Whether you’re starting summer in Cabarrus County or finishing the season strong, Charlotte Motor Speedway offers plenty of events for fast family fun. The Summer Shootout Series is weekday grassroots racing and everything from school buses to mascots take the track. Then, say good- bye to summer in a big way at The Dirt Track’s Back-to-School Monster Truck Bash in August. For an educational experience outside of the classroom, go to Reed Gold Mine. It’s the site of America’s first documented discovery of gold and summer is the perfect time to explore it. Cool off with nature’s AC in the restored underground tunnels and dip into water from Little Meadow Creek while panning for gold. More water awaits along the nearby Caro- lina Thread Trail where you can paddle the Rocky River. Need a guide for your group? Capstone Climbing & Adventure offers plenty of options for outdoor exploration.
cold drink and good eats everywhere from Food Truck Friday at Cabar- rus Brewing’s beer garden to local restaurants with inviting patios. In the mood for ice cream? Fun flavor illustrations on Cabarrus Creamery’s menu chalkboard make it tough to choose a scoop. Once you find the right flavor, park it on a bench out front along Union Street and dive in. When you’re ready to get out of the elements, Great Wolf Lodge is an oasis that offers all the amenities your family needs for the ultimate sum- mer vacay under one roof. The largest indoor waterpark in the Carolinas is complete with 11 waterslides, a 4-story tree house water fort with tip- ping bucket, four play pools and more. Then dry off and go bowling, be pampered at the spas, play in the arcade, take part in daily activities, savor each restaurant and fly high on the ropes course when you’re ready to get back outside. Keep reading to learn what it’s like during the winter! Charlotte Motor Speedway puts an exclamation point on the summer season with the Parade of Power. This caravan of cars previews upcoming events and includes examples of the different types of automobiles you’ll find at CMS in the fall.
Summer is the time to go all al fresco and that includes dining. Enjoy a

Fall
Fall color starts appearing in September and the season becomes even more vibrant in October and November.
The Cabarrus County Fair is the unofficial green flag of the fall season, and this one takes best of show. Zip and zoom through the crisp air on over 40 rides, cheer on Robinson’s Racing Pigs, marvel at the chainsaw artist’s masterpiece and more. Then, snack on roasted corn, cotton candy and fried everything. Even a few well-known race car drivers have enjoyed this hometown favorite. In October, Riverbend Farm opens for the essential pick-your-own pump- kin patch experience. There’s also an abundance of fall-flavored local brews to choose from this time of year. Many of the area’s craft beverage hotspots hold events where you can raise a glass of something spiced and celebrate the season including Cabarrus Brewing Company’s Okto- berfest and Rocky River Vineyard’s Fall Festival. Lower temps typically mean faster speeds, so races are just as plenti- ful in the fall. All three of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s tracks host fall events beginning with the Bank of America ROVAL 400 at the end of September when the legendary 1.5-mile track transforms into a 2.28- mile road course. ROVAL ran for the first time in 2018 and resulted in a race that offered plenty of twists, turns and on-your-feet excitement. At zMAX Dragway, a side-by-side display of speed takes place in Octo- ber with the NHRA Carolina Nationals, and the World of Outlaws cap
the season by crowning champions during the World Finals at The Dirt track in November.
If you’ve got a restored ride, fall is prime time for a weekend road trip. Kannapolis Cruise-Ins are held the 2nd Saturday afternoon of the month, and Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new Cars & Coffee gatherings take place every 3rd Saturday morning of the month. Classic cars, hot rods and gear- heads welcome! Soon after the Halloween Candy Crawl in Downtown Concord, the scenery starts to get festive in Cabarrus County. From Black Friday sales at Concord Mills to Small Business Saturday at independent stores, holiday shopping commences and with it we welcome winter in all its twinkling glory.

Winter
Indoor attractions are key when the weather chills out from December to February. The good news? You can do it all from inside—swimming, racing and even skydiving. Discover the magical world of Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge. This winter wonderland offers the best of both worlds with snow showers inside the lobby and the 80,000-square-foot water park which is always a toasty 84 degrees. In addition to an action-packed schedule of festive, free events and activities, Santa visits on the weekends and you can even dine inside a life-size gingerbread house. Bundle up for more unforgettable Christmas experiences. Along with several holiday parades and tree lightings, Cabarrus County is home to some season-long must-see events. Take a train ride through a daz- zling display of lights, ride the double-decker carousel and see the Sign- ing Bears perform during a Kannapolis Christmas. Then, drive through over 3 million LED lights with Speedway Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a spectacular 3.75-mile course that lets you drive your car on the track. On the weekends, you can also visit the Christmas Village for tons of family fun and cozy up to a drive-in holiday movie on the infield’s big screen. Located at the largest shopping and entertainment destination in the Carolinas, SEA LIFE Aquarium brings you back inside and under the sea for a close-up look at over 5,000 creatures. In addition to making a few hot laps around Concord Mills, warm up with even more indoor adrenaline
experiences. Challenge your crew and take your place atop the podium with all-electric go kart racing at K1 Speed. Then, suit up and take flight— iFLY offers the chance to go skydiving indoors. Cool weather kindles a craving for comfort food, so don’t start on those New Year’s resolutions just yet. You’ll find plenty of places serving scratch-made southern delights and sharable decedent desserts. See page 32 for a full list of places to eat. Looking to keep it local? We’ve noted independent restaurants so you can easily find a meal from right here in Cabarrus County. By February, the start of another race season is upon us and NASCAR team planes are taking off for Daytona from Concord-Padgett Regional Airport. Flying Allegiant Air? Look out the window and wave! Your favorite team might just be in the same stretch of sky.
Any time is a great time to visit Cabarrus County! Find even more events on pages 24-27 and get in touch with one of our Travel Counselors today for assistance with creating your own customized itinerary.

I N M O T I O N History
You’ll find it in restored walls of restaurants, breweries, and the local distillery. It’s in storied grandstand seats and lyrics written by locals, illustrated through creative passion, carved into commemorative bricks, running through Little Meadow Creek and all along downtown streets.
IT’S CABARRUS COUNTY’S HISTORY.
And every time you pan for gold, attend an induction, see a live performance or partake in any of the area’s cultural activities, you help keep it alive.
