As the site of America’s first documented discovery of gold, Reed Gold Mine is a must-see while visiting Midland. In 1799, 12-year old Conrad Reed found a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek. Learn all about this State Historic Site with exhibits and min ing equipment on display, then wander through restored under ground tunnels. From April to October, you can even try your hand at panning for gold! Find gold by the bottle next door at Rocky River Vineyards . The 45-acre family-owned and operated vineyard and winery offers a va riety of red, white, and blended wines including “White Gold,” named in honor of their historic neighbor. Speaking of gold, several wines from their selection are NC State Fair award winners! Along with festivals and events featuring live music, craft vendors and food trucks, there are many ways to enjoy this scenic spot. Find your favorite flavor with a sit-down tasting or wine flight. Grab a porch seat and sip a glass while snacking on charcuterie or take in panoramic views of Muscadine vines from the pavilion patio with a refreshing wine slushie in hand. Midland’s rich outdoor experiences continue with warm rays of sun shine at Rob Wallace Park and the glistening waters of the Rocky River Blueway . Part of the Carolina Thread Trail , the blueway’s northern most canoe/kayak put-in is located in Pharr Family Pre serve . About four miles downriver, you’ll reach the launch located at Riverbend Farm Trail , an out-and-back natural surface trail ideal for walking or running. Every October, Riverbend Farm welcomes visitors for festive fun at their seasonal pumpkin patch. For more on-farm experiences, stop by Deer Run Farm in the Spring to pick-your-own strawber ries and visit Midland Farms during an event or any time to pick up specialty farm-fresh products including their very own goat’s milk soap.
