Cabarrus was founded in 1792. To honor the resolution of a disagreement over where to locate the county seat, the city was established in 1796 and given the name Concord, meaning harmony. The main thoroughfare was called Union Street. The Historic Cabarrus County Courthouse celebrates 150 years in 2026 . Built in 1876, the beautifully preserved building is now a space where visitors can enjoy arts and dive deeper into the destination’s story. In Midland, Reed Gold Mine is the site of America’s first documented discovery of gold . In 1799, a 12-year old boy found the 17-pound nugget in Little Meadow Creek. Today, visitors can pan for gold and tour under ground tunnels. Cabarrus County has been home to 44 textile mills over the decades, dating back to the 1800s. Nods to that legacy are woven into many of today’s experiences.

Renowned for auto racing, the destination hosts major motorsports events including the Coca-Cola 600 at Char lotte Motor Speedway. At 600 miles, this crown jewel race is the longest race of the NASCAR season.

Standing nine feet tall and weighing 900 pounds, a bronze statue of stock car racing legend and NA SCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt stands at the cen ter of a tribute plaza in his hometown of Kannapolis.

With more than 200 stores and restaurants , Concord Mills is the state’s largest outlet and value retail shopping center where visitors can find designer deals, dining and family-friendly entertainment under one roof.

In Mount Pleasant, a former prison opened in 1929 now houses an award-winning distillery where you can tour the campus and sip local bourbon.

Harrisburg Park logged more than 600,000 visits in 2025 ranking it 24th out of 775 parks across the state of North Carolina.
