Home of America’s First Gold Discovery!
Located in southern Cabarrus County, Midland (pronounced “Mid-LAND”) is home to Reed Gold Mine—site of America’s first documented discovery of gold. In 1799, 12-year-old Con- rad Reed found a 17-pound gold nugget in the creek on his family’s farm. Today, you can go on your very own search for gold during panning season and keep what you find! Then,
take a guided tour through restored portions of the under- ground mine tunnels, browse exhibits in the Visitor Center and see historic mining equipment on display including the recon- structed stamp mill which is operational and demonstrated daily during panning season. Plus, the grounds of this State Historic Site also include trails and picnic areas.
